| Customer Reviews: Great Book -- For What It Is August 31, 2010 M. Dobbs (Astoria, NY) I just finished reading this book, and I am pretty impressed. The author is very knowledgeable about survival tactics, and there is a great deal of very useful information in the book. I certainly can't afford to do much of what he suggests, but the book does make a handy reference guide. It's one that I plan to leave on my shelf and refer back to going forward, as I try to prepare for SHTF.
I had a bunch of issues with the book, though. The editing was very, very poor, and was a distraction in places. The character development was weak, and the dialogue was stilted. The first 100 or so pages of the book plodded along -- it wasn't until I got to the last half that I couldn't put it down. The book was also heavy handed on the religion. In one passage, the heads of two survival groups meet, and one asks the other one whether his group is Christian. I can't see why that matters, as long as the people are good people.
I gave the book 4 stars despite the flaws because I took it for what it is: a survival manual not-so-cleverly disguised as fiction. Read it for the survival tips and use it as a reference guide, would be my advise. And don't let this be your only one, either (unless you're a millionaire). It's the first one I've read, but it won't be my last.

I'm not a writer and have no affiliation with the author whatsoever. Having said this, some things to consider are as follows:
- The novel is at it's best as a primer for someone considering their own preparedness in case of societal collapse. Much of the book is written from the standpoint of the characters' needs versus what they had previously horded, could fashion with available resources or simply do without. In this way, the reader could follow the logic and in some cases the chronology of what things would be needed and why.
- Other reviewers were critical of the wooden characters in the book. I found it true as well. In some cases they were so simplistic as to be overly so. But keep in mind the first point mentioned above; The story exists to drive a how-to manual of sorts embedded within.
- US Military procedure was called upon frequently in this story as a consistant methodology for dealing with routines. Unfortunately, unless the reader has a fair indoctrination into military affairs, I can see where some events wouldn't make total sense.
- Even if you understand military procedure, I found myself strongly questioning the logic in many of the good guys' operations. Hiding along the side of a public road to essentially detain, and in some cases execute, stragglers who are passing by that pose no immediate threat? Then later on in the story to have the tables turned where some of the good guys are obstructed along the road and respond by killing their obstructors?
- As other reviewers also mentioned, and I agree, the book's manuscript must have been written over a period of years or even decades. Numerous references to '80's and 90's survival fantasy media, seemingly understood by all characters involved as if it were recent. Firearms that were state of the art 10-20 years ago, while completely ignoring more modern ones.
- Finally, the low point in the book for me was inclusion of the 'Keane' brothers. These thinly-veiled characters were lifted from several real-life brothers who terrorized law enforcement in the mid-west for several months during the mid-'90's. That the author would spend time explaining 'soveriegn citizen' ideology or excusing these cretins for being unable to follow the same laws the rest of us have to, was unnecessary and unfortunate. It's clear that the author has sympathy for the real brothers, but what his relationship to them is, I don't know.
While the novel will likely not end up on anyone's classics list, it is worth reading for the gut-check it could provide the reader.

This is one of the coolest books that I have read. I don't normally read very much, especially not books that are 385 pages long, but I couldn't and didn't want to stop reading this. I took many notes and marked many pages with sticky notes. I plan on using this as a guide to prepare for what I need in the coming collapse of our nation due to the politicians in Washington. It's not just a R or D thing in Washington, it's the whole kit-n-kaboodle. They all could give a crap about you and me, they are just interested in lining their pockets and getting re-elected. A government that is powerful enough to give you everything, is powerful enough to take everything you have. Look in the news, are there any left that aren't corrupt? Since I am a strong Christian, I love how this book was written in a perspective that I can associate with. I enjoyed not reading swear words. I hope that our nation does not come to this and the Lord returns before my family will have to go through anything like this, but we need to prepare for something like this to happen in America. During the Tribulation the earth will be almost void of people. Do you know that there's only one way? Are you ready? It could be today.
A Must Read for Every American August 25, 2010 JonB This is an excellent book. Like One Second After, it is informative and instructive, but it is also an awesome story. I already read it, but bought a copy to read again and to pass around to friends.
