| Customer Reviews: Fully Biblical Methods for Raising Children July 31, 2010 Brad Wood (Denver, CO) Are you interested in raising your children in the way God has advised we raise them? If so, don't hesitate - buy the book now. If not, keep browsing for modern culture / psychologically influenced methodologies. God is love, and no methods other than those he has prescribed in his word are more loving. Yes, this including spanking. God's word is completely clear about the necessity of this method of correction, and pastor Tripp explains how to carry this out in perfect love.
More importantly, he explains how we direct our children's hearts; why so many methods of parenting fail - because they don't address the proper motivations for obedience. Anyway, I can't explain it very well, get the book. Follow it's instructions and your children will benefit in myriad ways.
Pastor Tripp claims that, at the time of writing, his teenage children are well behaved, obedient, children who have required no correction in months. I believe him (feel free to believe he's lying). If he's telling the truth, however, how far removed from your average modern household is that? In fact, if you don't believe it, it's probably because you can't imagine such a situation. Is that even possible given all we know about teenagers in our modern culture? God has the answer to that. See what he has to say.
Best book July 26, 2010 ANA LUCIA PEREIRA PIRES (BUCELAS, Portugal) This is the best book to teach you discipline to your children at the same time as you teach christian values so they will learn to walk with God.The best book i read on the subject.Truly a must read for every christian parent.
If you read one parenting book, read this one. July 24, 2010 Aly_sun Tedd Tripp gets to the heart of the issue and I appreciate this book so much. I recommend it to anyone who will listen. Instead of punishing for behavioral problems (like I was doing before I read this book), I've learned how to get to the cause. I noticed a huge change in my 4 year old when I started asking her questions about her actions and also explaining punishments. I also have a 2 year old and am able to use the techniques with her as well. I'm a calmer, more educated parent because of what this book recommends.
My Go-To Parenting Book July 13, 2010 Nuts4knits (Middle Tennessee) Practical. Wise. Encouraging. Loving. Ethical. I highly recommend this book for parents who want godly kids rather than perfect kids.
I bought this when I had my first baby. I've read and re-read this many times, and I can honestly say I've seen the fruit in my own kids' hearts (they are 9 and 12). I had no models for this kind of parenting, so I loved having my hands held, so to speak, by a fellow believer who clearly loves Jesus and His children. I was one who would have focused on behavior, and would not have put much emphasis on getting to the heart behind behavior, had it not been for the advice in this book. I was particular affected by his warnings about emphasizing my standards which the kids CAN live up to (and so creating hypocrites/Pharisees)instead of God's perfect standards and our need for redemption.
Most of the negative reviews focus on Tripp's advice for spanking. After using his biblical principles for 12 years, I can say I'm a believer. Dr. Tripp is VERY clear as to how, when, and why, as well as when you shouldn't. Even if you cannot bring yourself to spank your kids and choose other means of correction, there's still a wealth of good advice that should not be discounted.
Highly Recommended July 2, 2010 Dawn Martin 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the best book I've read on Christian child training. At least in theory. My child is too young to see the fruit yet. . . . However, I really liked Tripp's emphasis on getting to the heart of the matter, not merely addressing the outside behavior. Several examples really made me think, realizing how shallow my approach was.
I got the audio CD's as my husband would take a year or more to get through the book, but listens to sermons all the time, so this is the best way to get the information to him so I can have his feedback ;-)
